The Samsung FPT5084 50 in Plasma HDTV is capable of creating a display that is a true (1080p) high definition picture. The widescreen TV is Samsung's first venture into the 1080 hd market. Typically, plasmas have had issues displaying dark blacks. However, this television does a pretty decent job. In my opinion, the FP-T5084 is definitely on par or better than many of the plasmas being sold today.

Although the picture quality is pretty good right out of the box, some adjustment was needed to achieve the best possible picture. Luckily, the Samsung FPT5084 provides plenty of picture controls that are user friendly. Once adjusted, the Samsung delivers a bright and colorful picture. The HDTV is able to manage a broad color range equally well.

The Samsung FPT5084 HDTV is sleek and visually pleasing. Samsung has placed the speakers (hidden) to the side of the 50 inch screen, as opposed to the bottom. This makes the panel shorter and wider, which, in turn, makes it easier on the eyes. The sides of the TV also consist of chrome colored strips, which curve towards the outside of the TV and conceal the hidden speakers. The top and bottom frame of the Samsung FPT5084 is thin for a plasma of 50 inches. The bottom panel includes Samsung's logo and blue light. However, this particular feature can be turned off.

The Samsung FTP5084 Plasma is a quality television that is recommended to someone who is looking for an affordable 1080p HD set. Samsung has done a lot of things right, even if it is not perfect. I would like to see a screen that better reduces glare and better processing of non-hd programming, but these are in no way a deal breaker.

Hopefully Samsung will address these issues with their next set. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the performance of the Samsung FPT5084 and believe that it is a great buy.

Semi-Pro Movie Review

BOTTOM LINE: For a comedy there are hardly any laughs, and despite some great production design, visuals and a strong performance by Woody Harrelson, this film is a waste of time, especially with Will Ferrel's unfunny and stupid lead character.

THE GOOD: I wasn't quite sure what to expect when going in to this film. The previews seemed to suggest a stupid Will Ferrel comedy and surprisingly, there's an actual story in here about an ex-70's pop-star turned manager of the Flint Michigan Tropics Basketball team and his attempt to keep his team alive during the merger between the NBA and ABA. The production design and visuals are very good, having a glossy, authentic feel to them. Woody Harrelson is excellent as the new addition to the team who becomes the coach of the Tropics. He's the only sane man in the team and he does a very good job of carrying the film when Ferrel doesn't (see below!). This is a decent period piece film, and the story is sustainable enough for you to sit through it and not got bored.

THE BAD: The film is billed as a comedy but there are no laughs. That might be a problem... Okay, I'm being harsh. I think I suppressed a chuckle once or twice during the running time. Considering the way the film is built around Will Ferrel as a star vehicle, he doesn't really deliver anything comedic and in fact, it looks as if putting on this performance for him was akin to pulling teeth. He is endearing, but he's also stupid, and gets up to stupid antics. Wrestling a bear? The Disco-Stu hair cut and outfit? Being the heart and soul of the Tropics team but single-handedly also ruins their chances at every turn? Flapping your arms around and making silly noises will only make a baby laugh and unfortunately you have to sit through 90 minutes of it. To be fair it's the script; Ferrel just doesn't have anything to work with except for silly scenarios which given the structure of the story seem completely out of place. Even the two Tropics radio announcers, who are akin to the two old men in the Muppets, are a wasted opportunity for laughs given their unfunny banter. I really hated the final sequence where Ferrel is in heaven talking to his momma... Not good. It's moments like that that kill the rest of the film, whatever there is that's good. I don't know if this film could have been funny, but perhaps if it had been moved towards the more light-hearted drama genre it would have worked better.

Film Review - District 9 (2009)

BOTTOM LINE: "District 9" wins big points for originality, execution and its decidedly risky story and execution, given its pitch as a mainstream film. The film however overstays its welcome and descends into typical Hollywood convention, action and noise by the end.

THE GOOD: There is much to praise in this film by young upcoming director Neil Blomkamp. With oscar-winner Peter Jackson in his producing corner, Blomkamp has been able to turn a $30 million film in to one that rivals films with three times that budget. He has also been given free reign to execute the film in whatever manner he saw fit, which is again, quite rare in Hollywood filmmaking unless you are one of the top directors, least of all on one of your first features. "District 9" tells its story through a combination of documentary and hand-held action techniques, and coupled with the film's risky story which sees alien refugees trying to co-exist with humans in a very apartheid-like society in South Africa, you have in effect an arthouse film pitched for the mainstream market. The film is not afraid to use its science-fiction context to discuss racial issues, delving in to the darker aspects of human behaviour. The apartheid motif is about as subtle as a sledge-hammer, with the aliens taking the place of blacks (the aliens are referred to as "prawns" by the human characters), although it does allow many moments of social and political commentary that give food for thought. This is borne out in the character of Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is in charge of moving the aliens out of District 9 and away from the human population who have grown fed up with their presence. When he is exposed to a piece of alien biotechnology, he suddenly finds himself transforming in to one of the aliens and is forced to seek refuge in District 9; he tries to find a way to transform himself back in to a human while the agency he used to be in charge of hunts him down in order to conduct their own experiments on him. The cast is filled with unknowns who do a particularly good job with their performances, particularly Sharlto Copley who not only sees his character transform from human to alien, but also from a coward to a reluctant hero. Although this is a film with aliens and is set within the realm of science-fiction, "District 9" is really a commentary about how ugly humans can be. The filmmakers deserve their kudos for making such a risky story within the realms of mainstream filmmaking. Neil Blomkamp in particular has shown a remarkable amount of skill as director in bringing to life this rather unusual story.

THE BAD: Despite its unique approach, "District 9" does manage to stumble in to typical conventions, particularly in its second hour. By this point, there is so much noise, explosions, bullets and people being blasted by alien weapons that it all becomes tedious and over the top. The conventions are a plenty, including the smart and cute alien kid, the object of pursuit (ie The MacGuffin) which is the alien biotechnology, the fish out of water story where an oppressor comes to sympathise with those he oppressed, and a flimsy fugitive-esque chase story. All of these elements are not new and stand out as a little disappointing in an otherwise unique genre film that manages to all but exceed its origins. The character of Wikus is difficult to follow; he is such a coward in the first hour that you do not feel that much sympathy for him. Even in the second hour when he has that moment where he does not think of himself but he puts the fate of his new alien friend ahead of his own, there is still not much to sympathise with, even when we get to the last shot of Wikus, now fully transformed in to alien, constructing a flower which he sends to his wife. In the end, "District 9" manages to overstay its welcome by about twenty minutes, and largely that is due to too many action sequences in the climax which make the whole endeavour tedious rather than engaging and thrilling.

In 1907 a new form of actor training began developing by Konstantin Stanislavski, artistic director for the Moscow Art Theater in Russia. Stanislavski was already well known internationally as an actor and director and he searched for a training system that would awaken a performers emotions. To achieve the creative state of mind in an actor was his ultimate goal. He thought the performer's past emotional experiences could be relived on stage. He based his thoughts from preparing great actors and the knowledge of yoga. Stanislavski taught the Moscow Art players through physical exercises with emphasize on relaxation, concentration and belief. Stanislavski believed that stimulation through the five senses, one could reawaken and control these memories only indirectly.

Continuous revisions were made over several decades and many variations of Stanislavski system became the touchstone of 20th century actor training. Attention to truthful emotional awakening in an actor through facial detail made it a great technique for television and naturalistic films. Experimental and traditional directors however, sparked counter theories and opposing approaches to Stanislavski teachings.

Vsevolod Meyerhold and Mikhail Chekhov, both students of Stanislavski in Russia, created actor-training that ignored the psychological stimulation and was more geared to physical and imagination. In the 1930s German playwright Bertoit Brecht and French theorist Antonin Artaud, Avantgarde theater practitioners, also challenged Stanislavski. They believed his training was overly realistic and internalized. In countries such as France and England, where theatrical traditions were firmly planted, ignored Stanislavski's clarion call.

Stanislavski had his greatest success in the United States. Stanislavski's idea that was known as "the method" became popular with the Group Theater in the 1930s and the Actor's Studio two decades later. The Method was the postwar foundation for the motion-picture acting in Hollywood. Directors of the alternative American theater in the 1960s, especially the ones who were influenced by Artaud and Polish director Jerzy Grotowski, explored innovative acting techniques that gave emphasize to external and super physical qualities of the performer. In the late 1990s many American acting teachers borrowed Asian theater and modern dance traditions.

An American director and actor, Lee Strasberg (1901-1982) was the leading teacher of Stanislavski's acting technique known as "the method." Born in Budzanow, Austria-Hungary, Strasberg came to the United States in 1909 and became a naturalized citizen in 1936. Strasberg helped to found the Group Theater in 1931; he directed many of its Broadway plays and productions.

Strasberg became an artistic director of the Actors Studio in 1951 and the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute was founded in 1969. Maybe I'm just a little too jaded to enjoy romantic movies anymore. I'm probably the guy, at any rate, who had given up on dating and relationships. Wait a minute, I AM the guy. As much as this movie tries, in a really awkward way, to claim there is that "one" person out there for everyone or that relationships do work, it left me bored about half way through, wanting something different. When in Rome, I thought, had much more plot, even though it was not at all original. The Ugly Truth is, actually, not ugly - its just unoriginal.

I would not recommend this movie, even though it was well filmed and has talented acting in it. It's just way too typical, looking for cheap laughs, simply because the writing isn't able to carry it over. Run. Run.
